A Very Star Wars Christmas! (Blogger Advent Calendar)

* This post is doubling as my regularly scheduled Fangirl Friday. If you're new to Hooked on Books, check out Fangirl Friday here *

This past summer I moved to the big city (a.k.a Toronto) from my sleepy small town. It's been a huge change. Since moving here I've also begun working in the amazing industry that is publishing and additionally I work a part-time job in a bookstore. Between the two jobs, my writing and my blog it's been a whirlwind. It also means that I'll be up here, away from my family for most of the holiday season.

This is my first time that I won't be home (or withing a 45 minute drive from home) for the holidays and I wasn't really prepared. I have no decorations. No tree. There are people up here for me to celebrate with but I had no idea where to start.

So I figured since I'm starting Christmas fresh I might as well do it my way and the idea of a Very Star Wars Christmas was born. As you may have noticed looking around this blog I love speculative fiction and science fiction in particular. I remember the first time I saw Return of the Jedi and I remember skipping school and driving an hour to see the new movies when they were released (no movie theatre in my home town!). For all instensive purposes Star Wars has been as much a part of my life as Christmas so why not combine them?

Intrigued? Here are three of my favourite ways you can incorporate Star Wars into your Christmas!

1) Star Wars Snowflakes!

I'm sure you all remember making paper cut out snowflakes when you were little. They were super easy and it was fun to see what different patterns you could come up with. These aren't quite as easy as the one's you made as a child but they're actually a lot easier than I thought they would be. Patterns for Vader, Storm Troopers, Bobba Fett, Yoda, C3P-0 and Admiral Ackbar are available here

2) Star Wars Cookies
What is Christmas without cookies? If you want there are some really cute Star Wars cookie cutters from William Sanoma.  But if you just want to use ones you already have that's totally doable as well!! The Sweet Adventures of Sugarbelle put together a how-to, using regular cookie cutters! Check it out here.

So go wild! Santa needs cookies to keep his strength up.

3) Star Wars Tree Ornament

Last but not least, for a proper Star Wars Christmas, you need at least one ornament for your tree. I recently took up knitting so I scoured the internet for an ornament I could knit and I came up with this.

A knitted Death Star!! I definitely jumped up in down with excitement when I saw this! This pattern is available as a free download from Ravelry. I haven't attempted it myself (YET!) but it seems pretty straight forward. If you've got basic knitting skills I think you could pull it off.

So those are my top 3 Star Wars Christmas projects!! I hope you incorporate a few Star Wars elements into your holiday season!!!

Happy Holidays!!

  1. Okay, I LOVE those Star Wars snowflakes. the original star wars is the first movie I went to see in the theatres when I was five and I loved it. The first three films are definitely cultural touchstones in my life. not so much the more recent ones, which I found oddly disappointing and unsatisfying.

  3. No movie theatre in your town?! Wow, that is small! Sorry to hear you won't be home for Christmas, but at least you'll have these awesome Christmas-sy trinkets. I can't believe you made these... they all look very complicated. I've always wanted to learn to knit myself (if only just to be able to knit myself a Hogwarts scarf), but I can't imagine knitting that ornament after only recently taking up knitting! Very impressive.
