Haven Terra is a brainy, shy high school outcast. But everything begins to change when she turns sixteen. Along with her best friend Dante and their quiet and brilliant classmate Lance, she is awarded a prestigious internship in the big city— Chicago—and is sent to live and work at a swanky and stylish hotel under the watchful eyes of a group of gorgeous and shockingly young-looking strangers: powerful and alluring hotel owner Aurelia Brown; her second-in-command, the dashing Lucian Grove; and their stunning but aloof staff of glamazons called The Outfit. As Haven begins falling for Lucian, she discovers that these beautiful people are not quite what they seem. With the help of a mysterious book, she uncovers a network of secret passageways from the hotel’s jazz-age past that leads her to the heart of the evil agenda of Aurelia and company: they’re in the business of buying souls. Will they succeed in wooing Haven to join them in their recruitment efforts, or will she be able to thwart this devilish set’s plans to take the souls of her classmates on prom night at the hotel?
My Review
In the spirit of Dorian Gray, Illuminate by Aimee Agresti is
an enchanting and mysterious look into the battle between good and
evil in oneself.
This book was a lot of fun to read. I found that there was a lot of
mystery and intrigue. Although some facts were obvious (Outfit = bad,
Haven = good), many other things were more ambiguous and allowed for
more than a few surprises along the way. I also loved the action in
this book. Some actual butt-kicking takes place and I loved it! What
can I say I'm an action movie fan – I like to see the good guys
stickin it to the bad guys.
As I mentioned at the beginning of my review this book is very much
in the spirit of Dorian Gray. I'm a huge Oscar Wilde fan so this was
another big plus for me. Haven has a special ability to expose what's
in a person's soul (particularly when she takes a photo of them).
This skill is unbeknownst to her at first and she takes a series of
portraits of the Outfit. What happens to the pictures is quite
gruesome and if you've read Dorian Gray the similarities won't be
lost on you.
Weighing in at 531 pages this is one hefty book. I know a few people
have thought it is too long but I was grateful for the amount of
detail put into it. Because of its length we get to see more of
Haven's training, we get to see more of the inner workings of the
Outfit and we get to see more Lance. Seriously, I love this boy. He's
sweet, smart, likes to read. At one point he's compared to Clark
Kent. Definitely a winner in my books.
I had a lot of fun getting lost in this book so if you're a fan of YA
paranormal and/or fantasy books I definitely recommend you check this
one out.

I'd be an engineer so I can provide food for the famished in third world countries so hunger could be abolished! Thanks so much for the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteI'm so stuck on this question! Maybe ... I'd become a scientist and invent something to make time slow down. So that I could have more time to read. Ha!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway! :)
Hm...Is there anyway to ask for happiness? Is that cheating... it feels like cheating...
ReplyDeleteIt's not cheating at all! :)
DeleteI would ask for World Peace... no, just kidding! I would for the ability to make all jobs equal!
ReplyDelete"Haven's biggest desire is to become a doctor and cure cancer. What would you ask for if tempted by the Outfit?"
ReplyDeleteI'd definitely ask for something a little more selfless, perhaps help in ending world hunger.
i would like for peace for the world.
ReplyDelete"Haven's biggest desire is to become a doctor and cure cancer. What would you ask for if tempted by the Outfit?"
ReplyDeleteUm... that's a hard one.... there'S peace, and ending hunger. But... I'd say.... equality. Because children who were born in a poor country don't have the same chance as children born in a richer country.

ReplyDeleteNow being at my "old" age and really unable to return to school to become what I have only recently realized that I want to be "when I grow up", I would ask to be a librarian!!

ReplyDelete"Haven's biggest desire is to become a doctor and cure cancer. What would you ask for if tempted by the Outfit?"
ReplyDeleteInteresting question that presumes I would be on the "good" side! But, in fairness, if I'm being honest, my desire is to own my own vineyard in Paris, France, read and write books all day (professionally), and have a passionate affair with a poet should my husband and I not work out! :P
But in the spirit of this question, I'd ask to be able to travel in time, change form, and read minds. I'd pretty much ask for power---and then use it to thwart the evil Outfit! This way, I COULD still own my own vineyard in France...hehehehe.
P.S. I really like the person who said he/she would ask for a "unicorn!" Wonderful! I'm more of a mermaid type myself. :D
Thanks for the giveaway, Christa.
Zara
I would ask to have the power go back and change my past

ReplyDeleteHmm good question.. I'd ask to be happy, successful and living comfortably in Paris :)

ReplyDeleteGreat job with the review, Christa ;)
To answer you question:
I'd ask for my family members to live a long, healthy and happy life. Anything else would feel like a waste of wish.
Thanks for the chance~! <3
At the moment, I would ask that the BC government agree to all of the teachers' demands so that my husband doesn't have to be on strike anymore =(
ReplyDeleteI would probably wish that I wasn't so stuck on answering this question...but I wish I could find a cure to end all natural diseases.
ReplyDeleteI would want to be a Doctor and be able to cure anything!
ReplyDeleteStop everyone's suffering?
ReplyDeleteI would ask for the world to come together. There are no longer bounderies between countries. A "doctors without borders" type of thinking. When people need help, just go and help without thinking of the financial or political benefits.
ReplyDeleteTo go to heaven in the end. Loll. Or to make my parents proud of me, finally.
ReplyDeleteOhh I have been dying to read this book forever! :) Thanks for hosting such a great contest! As for the question ... hmmm that is a tricky one; although I think I'd have to say for my family and friends to be safe & live long HAPPY lives. Although tempting to wish for me to live in Scotland working in the architectural museum, having my own personal library in a castle - HAHAHA!
ReplyDeleteI would ask to get my manuscripts finally published into books :)
ReplyDeleteEquality and fairness <3
ReplyDeleteOMG such a HARD question!! I'm not sure to be honest... I would want something that would be for the greater good and not just myself but would that not alter too mush and mess something else up..?

ReplyDeleteLOL Unicorns :P
